Does Homeowners Insurance Pay for a New Roof? Here’s the Truth.

“Good news! Your roof has storm damage. Insurance is going to buy you a brand-new roof!”

If you’ve owned a home in Indiana for any length of time, you’ve probably heard that pitch.

A big storm rolls through, and within a few days, someone is knocking on your door offering a FREE roof inspection. Before you know it, they’re telling you they can get your insurance company to pay for a brand-new roof.

Sometimes that’s exactly what should happen.

Other times… not so much.

As an insurance agent here in Northern Indiana, I wanted to give you the honest truth.

First Things First…

Not every roofing company is bad.

In fact, there are a lot of reputable local roofing contractors that I trust and recommend. They do quality work, stand behind what they install, and genuinely help homeowners after legitimate storm damage.

The problem isn’t with good roofers.

The problem is with the companies whose entire business model revolves around convincing homeowners that every roof should become an insurance claim.

Insurance Isn’t a Roof Maintenance Plan

Here’s the easiest way to think about it.

Insurance is designed to cover sudden and accidental damage, not normal wear and tear.

Roofs get older.

Shingles lose granules.

Sealant dries out.

Flashing wears over time.

That’s called homeownership NOT an insurance claim.

If a hailstorm or windstorm genuinely damages your roof, that’s exactly why you carry homeowners insurance.

But simply having an older roof doesn’t automatically mean your insurance company owes you a new one. Coverage depends on your policy, the cause of the damage, and the adjuster’s inspection.

“Don’t Worry… Insurance Will Pay For It.”

Be careful with that statement.

No contractor can promise your insurance company will approve a claim.

No contractor works for your insurance company.

And no contractor can guarantee you’ll receive a full roof replacement before your claim has even been inspected.

If someone tells you they can “guarantee” insurance will buy you a roof before anyone has looked at it, that’s a red flag.

Filing a Claim Isn’t Always a Free Shot

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is:

“It doesn’t hurt to file a claim.”

Unfortunately, that’s NOT TRUE.

Every insurance company handles claims differently, but filing unnecessary claims can create headaches down the road.

Even if a claim isn’t paid, it’s still part of your insurance history. Depending on your carrier and circumstances, claims activity can affect future underwriting or renewal decisions. With many insurance companies tightening their guidelines, it’s more important than ever to file claims only when there is legitimate damage.

Storm Chasers Are Real

After every major storm, companies from all over the country show up in Indiana.

Some do excellent work.

Others disappear as quickly as they arrived.

Before signing anything:

  • Make sure they’re licensed and insured.
  • Read every document before signing.
  • Ask for local references.
  • Verify they have an established local presence.
  • Don’t feel pressured to sign today.

Remember; you have the right to choose your own contractor.

Here’s What I Recommend

If a roofer knocks on your door and says you may have storm damage:

Great. Have them inspect it.

If they believe there’s legitimate storm damage:

Call your insurance agent before filing a claim.

We’ll help you understand:

  • Whether the damage sounds claim-worthy.
  • What your deductible is.
  • Whether you have Replacement Cost or Actual Cash Value coverage.
  • What to expect during the claims process.
  • Whether filing a claim makes sense in your situation.

Sometimes filing a claim is absolutely the right decision.

Sometimes paying for a repair yourself is the smarter long-term move.

Every situation is different.

My Advice

I’ve been helping Indiana families with insurance since 2019, and here’s one thing I’ve learned:

If someone is more excited about filing an insurance claim than you are, slow down.

Ask questions.

Call your agent.

Get a second opinion if needed.

A trustworthy contractor won’t pressure you, and a good insurance agent will always help you make the decision that’s best for you; not what’s best for someone else’s sales commission.
