The recent flooding we’ve seen downstate in Central Indiana has been devastating. After unprecedented rainfall, many homeowners found themselves dealing with significant water damage — and unfortunately, many are finding out that standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding.
One report we saw indicated that less than 1% of those affected had flood insurance.
And honestly, that’s understandable.
Unless you live in a designated flood zone where your lender requires flood insurance, it’s probably a coverage you’ve never been required or even asked to purchase.
But as we’ve seen recently, you don’t have to live in a flood zone to experience a flood.
ERIE Extended Water Coverage
For our ERIE clients, there is another option worth knowing about: Extended Water Coverage.
Many homeowners already carry water/sewer backup coverage. That’s important coverage, but it’s primarily designed for water backing up through a sewer, drain or sump pump.
ERIE’s Extended Water Coverage goes considerably further. It can provide coverage for certain types of actual flooding, including rising surface water, rapid accumulation or runoff of water, and overflowing streams or rivers.
In simple terms:
Water/Sewer Backup = water coming up through your plumbing or sump system.
Extended Water = can also protect against floodwater coming into your home from outside.
Is It Worth Adding?
There is an additional cost, and coverage availability, limits and deductibles can vary.
But after seeing what homeowners just a few hours south of us experienced, we think it’s a coverage worth talking about.
If you have an ERIE homeowners policy with Huser Insurance, contact our office and we’ll be happy to check your policy, explain the coverage and let you know what it would cost to add.
